Depending on the tide, you will go for an early morning bird walk in the gardens of the lodge followed by breakfast and then go up river around 0800. There are 60 species of birds documented by us in this area. This is by no means complete. The “Bajo River Experience” is only fifteen minutes by boat from the lodge. Chug up the river Nangana’e through interesting mixed mangrove stands. You may see monkeys, monitor lizards, kingfishers, or other birds and if lucky estuarine crocodiles.

There are 2 villages that you can find when you pass the river; Nanga Na’e village and Mbrata village. The majority of the people who live in Nanga Na’e are Muslim, the houses of Nanga Na’e are in the same style as Bugis houses of Sulawesi. At the end of the village you will find an elementary school. This school is the primary education centre for the children who live in Nanga Na’e and Mbrata village. The majority of the people who live in Mbrata are Christian. The main jobs of people who live in Mbrata are related to farming….so you can see many attractive rice fields. The livestock of people who live there are buffalo, goats, and hens – just a simple way of life where the people practice tolerance and friendliness. Back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, you will proceed to the caves at Batu Cermin. Batu cermin is about 6 kms from the lodge and there you will find wildlife like monkeys, and sometimes pythons. Inside the cave you can find many small fruit bats, stalagmites, fish and turtle fossils on the wall of the cave. The visit takes around 3 hours round trip. The sun strikes flakes of mica through a chimney at certain times giving the name Mirror Cave (Gua Batu Cermin). On the way home, you will pass through the main sites of Labuan Bajo and have a drink in one of the pubs with a view.
